Cranbourn Street, London, 21st September 2006

I got back to London last night after a hectic week in Arles. Had a great time and have lots of images to sift through and unfortunately the French mozzies have taken rather a fancy to me. Am struggling to get my head back into blog mode so I’ll just post this pic of taxis I took a few years ago. It’s a bit tele for my tastes mostly but I guess that’s one of the drawbacks from using a zoom on the street as it can often make your compositions a bit lazy.

H.M.S. Belfast is one of those tourist attractions that most people don’t seem to take much notice of. The 2003 documentary Jump London which featured Sebastian Foucan leaping from the bridge to the gun turret of the ship, has been just about the most exciting thing that has happened to this ship since The Pogues launched the seminal album Rum, Sodomy and the Lash here in 1985. Maybe the two ladies in the picture passed on the opportunity of going aboard with their respective husbands and children.

Another portrait, this time with a knowing nod to André Kertész’s famous picture below. When I first came across this boy he was waiting outside a supermarket with his very British Bulldog. The puppy was standing on the ground on a lead and was making something of a nuisance of himself by taking up the entire pavement and I took a few shots of him watching everyone walk around him before I started to move on. Then I looked back and noticed that the boy had decided to pick him up to get him out of the way and I went back and asked for a few pictures. Not quite as sweet as the Kertész shot but a decidedly British version nonetheless.

The Astoria, Sutton Row, London, 23rd September 2006

I very rarely go out with the intention of shooting straight street photography and stop to ask someone for a portrait. I think the reason I did this one was because I quickly saw an opportunity to use the barriers that were used to seal off these waiting fans, as a vantage point to get a higher view of this girl laying down on the floor. My original intention was just to take her photo but I decided to take in a wider view and include some of her friends as well. Hin Chua and Ben Roberts took pictures of these girls here too but apparently they hurled polite abuse at them.
